When someone finds your restaurant on Google Search or Maps, the Menu tab is one of the first things they open. Google offers three ways to fill it: a link to your menu, items typed into Google, or photos of a printed menu. All three work. The difference is how much work it is to keep them right when your menu changes.
The three options at a glance
| Menu link | Items typed into Google | Photo or PDF of the menu | |
|---|---|---|---|
| When a price changes | Nothing to do on Google | Edit it on Google too | Take and upload a new photo |
| On a phone | Your menu, built for the screen | Google’s list layout | Pinch and zoom |
| Copies to maintain | One | Two | Two |
Option 1: add a menu link (recommended)
- Go to your Business Profile at business.google.com.
- Select Edit profile, then Business information, then Contact, then Menu link.
- Paste the link to your menu page.
- Select Save.
Because the link opens your live menu, Google always shows the current version. Change a price on your menu and you are done: the same link works on Google, on Instagram and behind the QR codes on your tables.
Option 2: type menu items into Google
- Go to your Business Profile and select Edit menu, above the search results.
- Select Add menu section, give it a name and add its first item.
- Select Add menu item for each dish: name, price and description. Then select Save.
- To change or remove an item, open it, edit or select Delete, and save.
This puts items directly on your profile, but it is a second copy of your menu. Every change has to be made twice, and a missed one means Google shows guests the wrong price.
Option 3: upload a photo or PDF of your menu
- Go to your Business Profile, select Edit menu, then Photos of menu at the top.
- Select Select photos or a PDF, or drag the files in.
- Google says the full menu should fit on one page, in one sharp, well-lit photo.
A photo of a printed menu goes out of date the next time anything changes, and it is hard to read on a phone. If you use it, use it alongside a menu link, not instead of one.
Good to know
- Google says changes can take 24 to 48 hours to appear on Maps and Search.
- Customers can add their own photos of your menu, and those go out of date too. A menu link from you gives guests a current source.
- If Google finds more than one menu, you can pick your preferred one in the Menu tab, under Full menu.
- The menu editor is for food and drink businesses. If your menu comes from the Business Profile API, you may not see it.
